Mathematical Papers.

• Erdos Number: I previously thought that my Erdos number was 5, because the LRRW paper (see below ) is one of relatively few I have done in collaboration. Since Volker's Erdos number is 4, I thought mine must be 5. However mine is in fact 4 -many thanks to my research student Matt Daws for pointing this out; the minimal path is Read to H.G. Dales (see paper below ) to Walter Hayman, who has an Erdos number of 2 via seven different authors. See http://www.oakland.edu/enp for general info on Erdos numbers.
• Paper "Strictly Singular operators and the Invariant subspace problem". In in PDF or in DVI format. This was published in Studia Mathematica 132 (3) 203-226 (1999).
• Paper "Quasinilpotent operators and the Invariant subspace problem"; available in PDF or in TeX DVI format
• Paper Amenable and weakly amenable Banach algebras with compact multiplication , (this paper concerns a commutative radical Banach algebra with a bounded approximate identity of normalised powers). This paper is joint work with Rick Loy, Volker Runde and George Willis, and it appeared in Jour. Funct. Anal. 171 (2000), 78-114. Available as a DVI file or in PDF format.
• DVI file crab.dvi , containing paper "Commutative Radical Amenable Banach algebras". This paper was accepted by Studia Math., and in the process some corrections were made, the new version going up on 28/1/00. It has now been published in Studia Mathematica 140 (3) (2000).
• DVI file primes.dvi , containing paper "All Primes have Closed Range", concerning classification of elements in commutative Banach algebras, especially commutative radical Banach algebras. This paper has now been published in Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 33 (2001) 341-346. A rare opportunity to see Dr. Read give a proof of a conjecture rather than a counterexample! Or you can have the same file in Postscript.
• New paper "Relative amenability and the non-amenability of B(l^1)." This paper is J. Aust. Math. Soc 80 (2006) 317-333.
• Paper "Derivations with large separating subspace" , Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 130 No. 12 pp 3671-3677 (2002). On a Frechet algebra, the separating subspace of a derivation from the algebra to itself may not lie inside the radical. In fact, it may be the whole space - we give an example.
• Updated 15/5/01: Another nice, short paper: "C* algebras with dense nilpotent subalgebras" answering a question posed by Dales that relates both to automatic continuity theory and to previous work in C* algebras by Herrero and others (e.g. Apostol, Foias and Voiculescu). Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 35 (2003) 362-366.
• Paper "The Decomposition of Lie Derivations". Irish Mathematical Society Bulletin 51 (2003), 11-20.
• Paper "A properly infinite Banach *-algebra with a nonzero, bounded trace". With co-authors Garth Dales and Niels Laustsen. In TeX DVI format or in PDF format or PostScript format . This paper has appeared in Studia Mathematica 155 (2) 107-129 (2003).
• Paper "A large weak operator closure for the algebra generated by two isometries". This has been accepted by the Journal of Operator Theory. In TeX DVI format.
• Paper "The lattice of closed ideals in the Banach algebra of operators on certain Banach spaces" (in TeX DVI format). With co-authors Rick Loy and Niels Laustsen. This has appeared in Jour. Funct. Anal. 214 (2004) 106-131.

• Paper "Normed upper interval algebras without nontrivial closed subalgebras". This has appeared as Studia Math 171(3) (2005). In TeX DVI format, or PDF .
• Paper "Nonstandard ideals from nonstandard dual pairs for L^1(\omega) and l^1(\omega)" . This paper gets nonstandard ideals with alpha(I)=0, and has been published in Canadian J. Math. 58 (4), 2006 pp.859-876. In DVI format.
• paper "A hypercyclic operator whose direct sum T+T is not hypercyclic" . With co-author Manuel de la Rosa. Submitted to the Journal of Operator Theory. In DVI format, or click here for PDF format.
